Between the Differences: Presentation and Construction of Thickness, Interstice and Porosity in Contemporary Landscape Design

Abstract:
With the increasing time and space compression in contemporary human settlements, landscape design has generated new value orientations. By comparing relevant design thinking and practices of revealing differences, this research establishes the design approach as organizing a heterogeneous structure, the semantic construction of a homogeneous structure, giving focus on the “in-between space”. It discusses the “thickness”, “interstice” and “porosity”, forming the observation of special dimensions in the space-time problem, since this perspective is conducive to creating the thickness of landscape significance, reserving space for site growth, and increasing the flexibility and interaction of different structures. It provides a new idea on how to use and present the historical information of the site, increase the perceptibility and richness of the site, and trigger more meanings and vitality in contemporary practice.
